How to be the Champion

It's going to take someone IN the schools to help fix our schools.  I have the time, the education, AND the experience we NEED to get New Hanover County Schools back on track.  I'm not afraid to do the hard work and put in the time our schools need and DESERVE!  I always have and I always will devote my time to being IN our schools, in our classrooms, listening to our staff, and listening to our families so when new policies come into question, I will know how they will or will not work in our schools. Curriculum Overview

While working IN OUR SCHOOLS I notice our curriculum is not meeting the needs of our children especially at the Kindergarten, First, and Second grade levels.  The skills being taught and books shared are not age appropriate.  Everything is so scripted with such strict time constraints that if a child is not grasping the concept, a teacher is not able to give more individualized help and ultimately falls behind.  I would like to work with families and staff to find a curriculum that offers the skills needed for our children to be successful and also built in time and resources so teachers can help anyone falling behind.  This should not be a quick or knee jerk decision but something thoughtful and planned out.  We MUST meet children where they are developmentally and cognitively in order for them to be successful.  I am just the person to help pull everyone together and get this job done

Policy Oversight

While working ON the New Hanover County Schools Family Advisory Committee, I learned a lot about the ins and outs of policy making but more important how the policy making ties into laws and general statutes.  I also saw that parents were having a voice on the backside through this council, teachers and staff may or may not have the same opportunity.  I would like to have a staff advisory council as well as a student advisory council which could meet regularly to learn how, what, and why for policy making, what can and can not be done in each school and our district, and their voices getting back to the school board.
